The Paradox of Forgiveness

May 8, 2022 | Bruce Utley

Forgiveness is one of the truly unique elements of the Christian faith. Both Judaism and Islam proclaim the One True God to be a forgiving Deity, but only Christianity places the obligation of forgiving others so squarely on the shoulders of God’s people. Like grace, forgiveness has about it the maddening quality of being undeserved, unmerited, and even unfair. All of us will face our own mountains of forgiveness, and it will surely be one of the hardest things we are called to do. Yet, in the end, it is forgiveness that will set us free.
